KEEP YOUR
EYES ON MISS BLACK FLORIDA USA 2006-2007
Miami
Gardens, FL.
Perpetua Phillips,
Miami native,
Florida International University Alumni, Dancer, Teacher, and
Choreographer is Miss Black Florida USA 2006-2007. Her platform is entitled, “Encouraging
Women of Color to Manifest Their Dreams.” The platform has developed
into a series of programs designed to engage women of color, specifically women
and teens of African American descent, to love themselves, to actively and
aggressively participate in their success and financial future and to lead and
love others without self compromise. In doing this, Ms. Phillips hopes to build,
as well as, reincarnate traditions around
Florida that will bridge gaps between
generations, uplift African American wealth and showcase positive female role
models in our Floridian communities. To find out how you can get a program

Perpetua
is a professional artist and recent graduate of
Florida
International
University. There she earned
her degree in Dance and is hoping that with the money raised and won with the
Miss Black USA competition she will be able to obtain her Master’s Degree in
Arts Administration from either
Florida
State
University or the
University of
Western Michigan. Perpetua
has had the opportunity to dance all over the states and has earned scholarships
to study with various influential organizations and artists including the Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theatre, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, the American Dance
Festival and the International Association of Blacks in Dance.
Since
becoming Miss Black Florida USA, Ms. Phillips has put her best foot forward to
serve where ever needed in and around
Florida. She has worked with several
organizations in helping to promote achievement and responsibility. In March of
2006, she attended Alpha Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.’s annual college tour to
Bethune
Cookman
College in Daytona and encouraged eighth
grade students from
Miami-Dade
County to start planning for
college now. She has also appeared at the Harry Belefonte/Tacolcy Center Family
Fun day, in
Miami, where venders and healthcare
professionals set up booths to help educate individuals about health related
issues affecting the black family today.
Recently, Perpetua has teamed up with Curley’s House of Style Inc./Hope Relief
Food Bank and the
Miami Dolphins to help feed the
elderly and homebound in Miami-Dade county. In the near future
Ms. Phillips hopes to implement several
activities throughout the State including a
Bowl-a-thon to raise scholarship money for
middle school aged girls around the state, a
Shoe and Clothing drive to donate to the Royal
Victoria Hospital in the Gambia, West Africa and several
Queen for a Day activities for High School Girls
in Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa,
Tallahassee and Sarasota. For more information on where and how you

In May of 2007, Perpetua will
go on to compete for the national title of Miss Black USA in the
Gambia,
West Africa.
The event is tentatively scheduled to be
aired live on the Black Family Channel. The Miss Black USA
Foundation has a vision to become the
largest single source of scholarship funds for African American women.
They endeavor to create strategic partnerships that will sustain the ongoing
legacy of achievement that fuels the dreams of the next generation of leaders
and strengthens the foundation of the community. The Miss Black USA Foundation
develops and promotes national leadership among women in the African American
community. The competition provides scholarship opportunities that allow state
delegates to pursue and achieve their educational, professional, and personal
goals. In the 2005-2006 competition the
Miss Black USA Foundation gave a $19,000 scholarship to the winning contestant,
Ms. Celi Marie Dean of
Minnesota and over $15,000 in
additional awards and prizes. The Miss Black USA Foundation aggressively
dissipates stereotypes that narrowly define achievement and beauty, and
produces women who are self-disciplined, strong, empowered, educated, and who
believe in serving as examples to other women of color. You can find out more
information about the Miss Black USA Foundation and its delegates at
